what happened to the Nirvana Nevermind cover baby?
Well get ready to feel old. Homeboy is now 17 years old and a senior in high school. The success in finding this guy can be credited to Jason Lazurus, who has started something called The Nirvana Project. The project relates to peoples first experience with the group. You can read more about the project here, and see a picture of the grown up baby after the jump.
Do you really want to know how the record business works? Do you care? It's kind of like the "the wizard of oz" effect, what's behind the curtain stays behind the curtain. Well if you're in for an interesting read, check out this piece in the guardian by Simon Napier.
"The life and crimes of the music biz,...EMI, like Decca, manufactured hi-tech equipment for the government, mainly for hospitals - brain scanners and the like. None of these companies had been set up first and foremost for music; they made records for extra profit. It was a wonderful trick they'd learnt. They bought vinyl cheaply; added a label, a song and a sleeve and sold it expensively."

Just saw some words about The Courteeners being "What the world is waiting for". Just like Oasis and Ian's old band, The Courteeners hail from Manchester and are being touted as the "it" group of 2008. You can decide and listen to them at myspace. The only thing myspace is really good for, previewing music before you steal. Pre-order the single now.
I was in the burbs of NJ this weekend and went to get some coffee from Starbucks (where else can you get coffee in the burbs?). Inside the store, I was blown away to see the new Radiohead album. After the "free pay as you go" album release, the $80.00 box set, and the announcement of expensive concert tickets, let's just say this is the last place I thought I would see them. Oh. I almost forgot the live performance on Current TV. I know Starbucks is the new distribution model for the record industry with its partnership with Apple, but this does not seem very "radiohead". Here's an old article from March 2007 where they denied signing with the Capitalist juggernaut Starbucks. How do you feel about it?
The Mars Volta, is promoting their new single with a puzzle. You need to figure out there new album art, and then you can download the single. Do you really want to waste this much time to here the song. It's not like its a At the Drive In. The new album comes out 01.29.08.
The Radiohead tour this summer will cost you around a $100.00. Tickets for the band’s UK tour are around £42.50. One of the band’s managers, Bryce Edge, has claimed that the tickets are being sold at a fair price. Do you think it's fair? I mean they did give the record away, so at least you can pay for the live show. And, when have they disappointed the fan? Via NME

Back in the day NIN released the digital tracks to its fans to allow them to make there own remixes........"… the main reason I did it was because I thought it was cool and something I would have liked to do if it was available to me. A lot of really fun stuff started to happen….communities developed, web sites were created, even traditional radio got in the game and began playing the fans' mixes. I felt the experiment, despite not having a specific purpose, was a success." So now they are releasing a album of the remixes, and they have created a site where people can share their work. Remix.NIN. Due to some legal issues the site is not up at the moment, but you can buy the songs on itunes.
To learn more about this issue and the Issue, the labels involvement and DMCA'S Safe Harbor provisions.... check out nin.com.
The First Run Limited Edition Robot Guitar from Gibson hits stores December 7, 2007—only 10 per store. "On December 7, 2007, Gibson will change the guitar world forever. Again. True to the spirit of innovation that inspired Gibson to invent the legendary Tune-o-matic bridge, the powerful humbucker, and the revolutionary Digital Les Paul, Gibson proudly presents the Gibson Robot Guitar—the world’s first guitar with robotic technology.".....Blah blah blah...... So does this mean besides manufacturing bands, record labels now can find "musicians" that do not even have to know how to tune their guitars.
Straigth from FMU, "The Burka Band claim to be Afghanistan's first girl group. ...A little googling reveals that this video was actually done in 2003 (well before the youtube era) and, as is usually the case when searching for information about obscure bands, it turns out that WFMU has been playing them for years. Who knew?" For more obscure stuff like this check out there blog form time to time.
Not only is the name of this website great, its content is tip-top. Over the years Cocaine Blunts has unearthed some of the dopest songs that I had never previously heard, including Young D Boyz, Sellin' Cocaine as Usual

For those who have not seen Downtown 81, you should. Even if it only be to see how much New York has changed in 20 + years. Re-releasing today is the soundtrack to the film, featuring some obscure groups from the downtown ny scene of the early 80's. Most notably the band Gray, which consisted of Jean-Michel Basquiat and indie film star Vincent Gallo. Style.com's blog has a nice interview with the man behind the film, Glenn O'Brien.
Some exciting news for fans of Radiohead, EMI will be releasing the entire back catalog of the group via one small Radiohead branded usb stick. Pre-order here via, material interest
Start your Monday off with a bang! It's 1990 again, PC DeathSquad, made a video that takes me back to the days of Monsters of Rock. Drinking 40's and schnapps and throwing up all over the place. Metal Rules!
Just in case you were worried about Morrissey's show tonight, meaning the opening act Kristeen, was fired! That's right canned, let go , kicked to the curb. As soon as her set was over on Tuesday night, she was met in her dressing room by the tour manager, who informed her she would not be included on the rest of the dates. She has an appointment to pick up her belongings on Friday. Via The Music Slut
For a review and a some free mp3's check it out here! BTW, The LP comes in a beautifully packed gatefold and includes a receipt to download the MP3s of the entire record. Its a hybrid packaging concept it seems.

The Hives were in NYC last night and were amazing. I have to say they are only a few bands out there that you look forward to hearing new material such as radiohead, (onsale today btw). The new songs were great and the show was live as ever.
The best part was when a band gets big, so do the jocks, and even better when they fight, and get kicked out it clears a path to the front of the stage like moses parting the red sea.
This photo is not for last nights show (from Eurockeennes, Belfort) but its from this tour. Photo taken by Rob or his flickr account. He has some amazing work so check it out. Twbe will be getting the advance of the new album today and we will let you know if it is as good as we think.(oct 14 release)

In conjunction with the release of their first ever digital-only single for “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” on October 21st, Oasis is rolling out this brand new video.
The “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” digital bundle, which includes two live tracks, can be pre-ordered from oasisinet.
The Cult's new album "Born into This", comes out today, a viral video is also making the rounds which combines footage of the uprising in Burma with THE CULT's "Tiger in the Sun" from "Born into This". If the band had nothing to do with this video, then they need to find the editor, the video combines powerfull images, on top of a good song, that becomes great and meaningful.
Radiohead will sell downloads of their new album In Rainbows from October 10 – eight weeks ahead of its physical equivalent – at whatever price you might care to pay for it. On October 10 go to their site and click on the question mark beside the price field for In Rainbows and it merely says, “It’s up to you.” There’s no doubt that thousands of people will pay price of a happy meal for the download. Presumably though, Tom Yorke and the boys, argument runs that those people would have obtained the album through file sharing websites. If this experiment works, it will – at the click of a few million mice – make them the most powerful band in Britain.
Well I am not sure if this is a good thing, or if they "jumped the shark"(again). This year as you're sipping your egg nog you can enjoy a Metallica Christmas

Amazon announced the public beta of a new service called Amazon MP3, a music download store that sells MP3 music downloads that do not include any Digital Rights Management (DRM). The MP3 formatted files are compatible with a wide range of music players, including the Apple iTunes, iPod and iPhone. Songs are priced from 89 cents to 99 cents, and albums from $5.99 to $9.99. All MP3s are encoded in 256kbps format and are now available at Amazon. Notice they needed to make sure the user knows it will work on its ipod, since that seems to be the only relevant digital music player to sell for.

They say rock and pop stars live life in the fast lane and now researchers
have proved it. A Liverpool John Moores University study of 1,050 US and European artists found they are twice as likely to die early than the rest of the population.....Read more about this fascinating fact at the BBC.
Misfits are on tour..... well the fake misfits have a "30th"anniversary tour. (cough, cough), and then there is the Danzig tour.........(with Doyle's band opening up). I saw Danzig at the Nokia theater 2 years ago with Doyle, they performed a 20-30 minutes set of classic Misfits, and all I have to say it was worth it! I was also surprised how he can sing like "danzig" and then switch it up and sing like "glenn" I was never lucky enough to see them live back in the day, but I have to say this was probably the closest chance you can get, and that chance is October 27th at Nokia once more, tickets are on sale now.

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Hilly Kristal, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from complications from Lung Cancer. Kristal, 75, founded the legendary rock club CBGB and ran the club for 33 years. A singer and songwriter himself, Kristal opened the club to showcase "Country Bluegrass and Blues"; instead the club became a breeding ground for Punk rock. Among the many acts that called CBGB home were Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Color, Patti Smith and the Ramones. The club
closed in October 2006, but CBGB continues, with a retail store in New York City and worldwide merchandise sales; in addition, there currently are plans to open new CBGB clubs in several locations.
Kristal is survived by his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, son, Mark Dana Kristal, son-in-law Ger Burgman, grandchildren Jenny and Adam Burgman, CBGB, and the thousands of artists and musicians who played the club.
A private memorial service is planned. A public memorial will be held at a later date. Contributions in Hilly's honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003). Bruce is set to release his first album with the E Street Band in 5 years. The first single which I heard this morning "radio nowhere" is actually pretty good. I surprised myself that I actually liked it. It may be the fact that it has a "timeless/updated sound" (figure that one out). I am not going out to pick up the album but I would not turn the dial to the next station. Does anyone still listen to radio? Listen for yourself, download it for free from itunes.
You may ask yourself what does the Public Enemy Logo mean? Or not, but anyway the story behind the logo is laded to rest. Chuck D: "I designed it in 1986. As a graphic graduate, I did it as a combo of two former groups. When the Public Enemy group and concept was signed to Def Jam in 1986, I simply moved the logo from the other dormant situation to PE. It was tightened up for the upcoming ads and album "Yo! Bum Rush The Show" in 1987 by New York artist Eric Haze. For the longest time, rumors had said it was a state trooper in the target scope, but the truth was it was a b-boy of that time where fedoras and Kangols were the hats of choice. I silhouetted E-Love, LL Cool J's right-hand man, in a fanzine named "Right On" with Magic Marker, X-acto-knifed it out then layed a target scope over it, using Wite-Out within the blackened figure. After some runs through the copier - presto." Via Pictogram

Last night my roommate Drew brought me to the Mercury Lounge to see a band I had never of before, Los Campesinos. Based out of Cardiff, Wales, the seven member band is in the words of VinDitto "a British Band playing Swedish Pop mixed with...... I don't know." All I know is that they are really good, quite young and full of energy. Tonight they headline the Mercury Lounge before heading to Philly and then back to the UK. $10 at the door.
While you wait and wait for Radiohead's follow-up to 2003’s Hail to the Thief, Jonny Greenwood will see an orchestral piece he wrote in 2004 come to life in the U.S. Greenwood penned Popcorn Superhet Receiver when he was the BBC Concert Orchestra’s Composer in Residence. The work will make it’s U.S. orchestral debut at New York’s St. Paul the Apostle on January 16-17 as part of the Wordless Music Series via a thirty-four-piece string orchestra. Radiohead has adapted an orchestral piece by Greenwood for the band in the past (”Arpeggi”), so perhaps the audience will be hearing a potential album track. Via Rolling Stone.

"The flamboyant singer of 'The Doors,' the beautiful California boy, had become an inert lump crumpled in the toilet of a nightclub." Sam Bernett, whose French-language book is called "The End: Jim Morrison," says he believes two drug dealers brought Morrison's body back to his apartment. The official story goes like this: On the last night of Jim Morrison's life, the rocker went to a movie in Paris, listened to records, fell ill and died of heart failure in his bathtub at the age of 27. Regardless on how he died, it sounds like it might be a good book to read. More on the story
Interpol's new album "Our Love to Admire", is out. If you have not checked out the new site, you should it is really beautiful. The songs you need to know are.....
Pioneer to the Falls, and All fired Up, are my picks. We at twbe have had the album for a while now and lets just say its a great album, it is in heavy rotation at the headquarters.
Metallica singer James Hetfield was investigated by UK airport officials who believed he was a terrorist this week, it has been claimed. The star was barred entry to Luton airport on Thursday and questioned by staff who were concerned about his appearance. Fears that Hetfield might be involved in terrorism were apparently founded on his "Taliban-like beard", according to The Times. He was allowed to leave the airport after a brief interrogation, when he persuaded officials that he was a rock star. Metallica played Live Earth at Wembley Stadium.Via Yahoo
Watch the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs video for “One Night In Paris”, on a crappy Yahoo video player. The only good thing is ...the song is good, its a good video, and you do not have to sit through a ad before the video plays.
Twbe, recommends checking out The Editors. They are playing webster hall, September 7th tickets are still available at ticketweb. Its a great live show!
Twbe music blog yonikkafreezmusics.blogspot.com has gathered a collection of links to download rare recordings of some really great bands. Black Flag, Fugazi, New Order, Ride, Quicksand, Sleep, Doves, the list goes on and on. Some are straight from vinyl, some are live, and some are mono. All I have to say its a great collection of free music. Check it out.
Truly the worlds best album title (working title that is, I hope they keep it, very fitting). The Hives are in the studio around the world, according to Blender magazine, the Hives have recorded with Dennis Herring(Modest Mouse), Garret Lee (U2) and....Pharrell Williams(a whole lot of people). "We know we are the best at playing fast rock music," says Pelle Almqvist The Hives, outspoken frontman but we wanted to stretch in different directions."...."so far, "less cohesive but more interesting." Its been described as Rolling Stones disco era meets AC/DC......Sounds like a winner to me
So, when I was about 12 years old in 1991 there was this great show on MTV—you might remember it—120 minutes. I used to tape this show on vhs and stew over it for 2 hours the following day, since staying up from 12 - 2 am on a Sunday did not really cut it for a pre-teen like myself. Let's fast forward to 2007, maybe 16 years to the date of the first time I saw the show. Apparently VH1 Classic is doing there own version of 120 minutes now, with all the old tracks that I was obsessed with. Same time, midnight Sunday, same length, 120 minutes and same good stuff. They even have a bit you can watch online here.

The Bad Brains are a coming. They are playing on a boat in NYC on June 25th (a Rocks Off cruise I assume) - kind of insane. They're playing the School of Rock Fest in NJ the day before. So mark your calendar!
FYI, if you missed it Interpol is playing the bowery on June 5th, and you guessed it its sold out already!

You need an opinion on Perry Farrell's new band, Satellite Party, will be playing @ Highline Ballroom on June 4, and will appear on David Letterman the Same day. I always knew there were two of them.
Looking for new music, looking for clothing? Check out Fredperry.com/subculture. Not only does he sell the staple polo, if your in a band or want to look like your in a band, or want to look like used to live in the lower eastside, and hang out at Little Frankies, and play music at the LF radio station. Then you know the shirt I am talking about. Besides all that the site has good music and a lot of music to choose from, check it out its a great site as well. Plus its Fred Perry, which has integrity.
This is an excerpt from an interview that was emailed to me. The interview is with Trent Reznor, regarding releasing music on major labels. it looks like he is following the example set by Prince, he is not changing his name, but he is stretching the gaps in a contract to the extreme, and setting new standards in marketing and integrity.
Given all that, do you have any idea how to approach the release of your next album?
I've have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal. Come see the show and buy a T-shirt if you like it. I would put out a nicely packaged merchandise piece, if you want to own a physical thing. And it would come out the day that it's done in the studio, not this "Let's wait three months" bulls---.
When your US label, Interscope, discovered the web-based alternate reality game (ARG) you'd built around Year Zero, were they happy for the free marketing or angry you hadn't let them in on it?
I chose to do this on my own, at great financial expense to myself, because I knew they wouldn't understand what it is, for one. And secondly, I didn't want it coming from a place of marketing, I wanted it coming from a place that was pure to the project. It's a way to present the story and the backdrop, something I would be excited to find as a fan. I knew the minute I talked to someone at the record label about it, they would be looking at it in terms of "How can we tie this in with a mobile provider?" That's what they do. If something lent itself to that, OK, I'm not opposed to the idea of not losing a lot of money (laughs). But it would only be if it made sense. I've had to position myself as the irrational, stubborn, crazy artist. At the end of the day, I'm not out to sabotage my career, but quality matters, and integrity matters. Jumping through any hoop or taking advantage of any desperate situation that comes up just to sell a product is harmful. It is.
Is the Year Zero ARG something labels will copy now?
Well, their response, when they saw that it did catch on like wildfire, was "Look how smart we are the way we marketed this record". That's the feedback I've gotten -- other artists who've met with that label ask 'em about it: "Yeah, you like what we did for Trent? Look what we did for Trent". They've then gone on to try to buy the company that did it to apply it to all their other acts. So, glad I could help them out. I'm sure they still don't understand what it is that we did or why it worked. But I will look forward to the Black Eyed Peas ARG, that should be amazing.
The Hives, one of my favorite bands ever, are known for their, self importance, shall we say, have put together a little video, declaring themselves as "titans". Anyway it is pretty epic so check it out.

According to BlabberMouth, VELVET REVOLVER will issue an EP titled "Harmony and the Tyranny" a month before the projected release of the band's new full-length CD, "Libertad". The EP will apparently contain two as-yet-unspecifired tracks from "Libertad" as well as the TALKING HEADS cover "Psycho Killer" (which was recorded during the "Libertad" sessions) and a video documentary about the making of "Libertad".
Here is the trailer from "From The Basement" is a music series that features the most intimate live performances from the finest musicians on the planet.
From The Basement sets a new standard for music TV production. The show is beautifully filmed in high-definition at Maida Vale studios in London with the live sound by producer Nigel Godrich. From The Basement has no host and no studio audience, instead the artist and their performance take centre stage.
The first episode is very special. From The Basement launches with Thom Yorke on the piano exclusively performing songs from the new Radiohead album, alongside incredible performances from The White Stripes and an improvised collaboration between Four Tet's Kieran Hebden and genius drummer Steve Reid. The whole episode has been filmed by acclaimed director Sophie Muller.
Each episode's performances will be available via download only to allow repeated viewings. Downloads are available right here and from iTunes.
From The Basement launches on the 18th December. Register to be kept abreast with the latest news and be the first to hear about the guests on forthcoming shows.

The track comes off the group's first proper studio album in over a decade, "Build A Nation", which is scheduled to arrive in stores on June 26 via Megaforce Records. Timbaland's new album "Shock Value", has a collaboration with the hives.....You decide, I am huge hives fan, so I am not sure how I feel about this one. Click here to listen.
The White Stripes are smarter than you? Only the smart ones shall pass. Its been reported, "are the stripes trying to weed out their intelligent fans from their vacuous ones, or are they just trying to create buzz for their new album Icky Thump (due out in June of this year)? " Either way, I guess its better than a coke commercial....oh wait they did that too.
In the past week we learn Pau McCartney will sign with Starbucks, and now we have Radiohead.(Maybe...rumored...who knows...Propaganda?)
Stay glued to the redesigned dead air space for news and photo's of the band playing music in hallways, and on exercise balls. I sure hope they make this one a tour poster.

New launch this week with the appearance of a Japanese edition of ROLLING STONE. Inside, you get a layout that is very reminiscent of the original magazine — and all the main articles (except for a piece on YMO/Sketch Show’s Yukihiro Takahashi) are just translated pieces from the US edition, even the album reviews — with a few “Japanese” add-ons, like fashion spreads (very catalogue-like, as seen in pretty much every Japanese men’s magazine) and things like a guide to Tokyo rock bars.
Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero campaign has been distributing tracks from the upcoming album on USB flash drives at concerts. The first two were found in bathroom stalls and then another taped to the barricade at a show.
They've all been 320 kbps MP3, DRM-free and widely distributed. Of course, the RIAA had a conniption, even though it's an official NIN viral promotion.
The new song,"In This Twilight", is accompanied by an apocalyptic website that imagines last night's a future Oscar ceremony as a scene of utter chaos and misery.
Excerpt, from the site..."Tabitha was born with seven fingers on each hand. Her father couldn’t take it. He joined the army instead so he could go to Iran and kill the people who did this to her. He says he’s not coming home until he’s got one for every finger. She just wants to see her dad."
Last year, when Courtney Love sold a 25% share of her stake in the Nirvana publishing catalog(probably to score some drugs) to music publisher Larry Mestel, a guy who would help her with licensing matters, she told Rolling Stone, "We're going to remain very tasteful, and we're going to [retain] the spirit of Nirvana and take Nirvana places it's never been before."
Well, we sure hope Kurt Cobain was a baseball fan, because Nirvana's "Breed" has turned up on the soundtrack to 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K7 video game, due out February 27.
A new album coming out in April, and now a new DVD. Trent has been busy, lifting weights, and making money.

The little purple man put on one hell of a show. Prince played through a rainy halftime, opening with "Let's go crazy" and closing with "Purple rain". The stage was gorgeous and his guitar solo, silhouetted in a flowing sheet was amazing. Prince made up for the dissappointment of Peyton Manning being named MVP.
Opening February 16th at Black and White gallery is Prince: Pre-fame. This exhibit consists of six never-before-seen pictures of the lil' man taken by friend Robert Whitman on the verge of stardom.
