“A middle-aged slacker shocked by bolts of electricity that transform him into a stocky, stick-wielding giant several stories high who is entrusted with defending Japan from a host of bizarre monsters. But while his predecessors were national heroes, he is a pariah among the citizens he protects, who bitterly complain about the noise and destruction of property he causes. And Daisato has his own problems – an agent insistent on branding him with sponsor advertisements, an Alzheimer-afflicted grandfather who transforms into a giant in dirty underwear, and a family who is embarrassed by his often cowardly exploits. A wickedly deadpan spin on the giant Japanese superhero, BIG MAN JAPAN is an outrageous portrait of a pathetic, but truly unique hero.”
I just read a couple, ok many reviews for this documentary, “Anvil, The story of Anvil”, lets just say there’s not one bad review out there. Meet the band that influenced Slayer, Metallica, GNR, and so many more, but never really made it big. Here’s the premise, “At 14, best friends Robb Reiner and Lips made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the “demi-gods of Canadian metal, ” influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams.” The film was director by Sacha Gervasi, who at 16 left home to tour with the band. In 2003,he reconnected with them and begin the process to make the documentary. for more info and clips of the film click here.

Translating Hollywood is a really cool book that I picked up recently. Written by Sam Sarowitz (whose collection the posters are from) and published by Mark Batty Publisher, the book displays foreign posters/interpretations for Major Motion Pictures in a couple different countries . It is great to look at all of the different designs for one movie, some classics. After the jump, a couple of my favorites.
