This Thursday, 55DSL’s art studio: Studio55 kicks off Pic+Mix, a series of collabrative exhibits between two artist from different mediums working together. The first exhibit promises to be a good one, featuring art director Sanderson Bob and blacksmith Sam Sherbone. So if you’re in town check it out, and have free beer from Tiger.

Back in 2006, Marc Quinn created this portrait of himself out of his own frozen blood that he had been collecting for a period of 5 months. He plans on repeating the process ever 5 years to record his aging, so expect another aged version in 2011. The portrait is also in an edition of 59 pigment prints on gesso coated aluminum, that are available through Paragon Press.

The folks at Kia sent us a blurb about their Soul Collective tour, it features Jeff Staple’s car, RAIN CAMO. The tour on the other hand is nationwide event where they are spending 4 days in select cities, with live music from bands like MGMT, The Walkmen, Santigold, The Clipse, Against Me!, Major Lazer, Silversun Pickups etc,etc. If you’re in one of the select cities you should check it out. The Journal Gallery is proud to present Salty Sap Green Black, Ida Ekblad`s first U.S. solo exhibition.

Ekblad (born 1980) is an artist currently living and working in Oslo, Norway. Her sculptural works: The Gold Bug Drift (NYC) are based on “drifts” in a given city, for Salty Sap Green Black the city is New York.

Like William Legrand in Edgar Allen Poe`s The Gold Bug, Ekblad has been bitten by a bug that has led her onto a path of unexpected undertakings; a form of modern day piracy. The gems and treasures gleaned from her “drifts” are laid to rest in vessels of concrete at the time of discovery and carried around the city in the course of production until her sculptures are achieved. The resulting works thus becoming the poetic attestations of her performative actions, unlike the “drift” itself, which Ekblad describes as the unequivocal treasure, the act of deconstructing habits of experiencing and discovering an area or a city.

Ekblad received a Masters degree from the National Academy of Art, Oslo in 2007 and attended the Mountain School of Arts, Los Angeles in 2008. Recent exhibitions include Favoured Nations: 5th North Biennial of Contemporary Art, Norway, What Leaf? What Mushroom? at New Jerseyy, Basel, Febermalerier at Gaudel De Stampa, Paris, Younger Than Jesus at The New Museum, New York, In Exile of The Mineral Kingdom at Annen Etage, Oslo, Woman under The Influence at Alessandro de March, Milan and Dark Continents at MOCA Miami. This fall she will be included in the three person group show, Europäisch-Amerikanische Freundschaft, at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York.

I just saw this over at Dezeen. A stuffed Victorian african grey crowned crane, decorated with a saddle, gold-plated silver and pearls. It looks really cool. So, if you’re in London be sure to check out Kelly McCall ’s “Fuck You and the Horse You Rode in On” a new exhibition at Sotheby’s this week.

big Bambú The Starns at their Beacon Studio

We just recieved a update from the Starn studio regarding a schedule change see below…..

Next weekend you need to head up to Beacon Ny. Doug and Mike Starn, will open there studio to allow access to their most recent work Big Bambú. Doug Starn writes…

Big Bambú is connotative of an autonomous, spontaneous, self-governing, disorganized network responding to itself to better navigate the environment. “It represents me- in that I am who I was, and, I am completely different than I was when I was a little boy.”

To truly have an understanding of its scale and meaning check out their site and watch the 3d rendering video linked below. It looks like there is limited access so plan wisely.
