Collector’s Edition: Pedro Winter

In this new series, titled “Collector’s Edition,” we ask people about their personal art collections—from the first piece of art they ever bought to what they want to acquire next. We’re kicking off this series with Pedro Winter (aka Busy P), who is the founder of Ed Banger Records and manages acts such as Justice, Sebastian, Mr. Oizo, Feadz and more. Pedro is also known for his interest in art—So Me designs all the imagery for his label; Neck Face paintings hang in his office in Paris; and Fuzi UVTPK tattooed his arm. Continue reading to learn about what Pedro collects.

What was the first piece of art you bought or acquired?
In 2003, for his first-ever show in Paris, I bought a Shepard Fairey piece. The gallery was owned by Invader. I loved that piece—for once Obey was going disco! Even though Joan Jett has nothing to do with disco! Hahaha.

What art do you have in your personal collection now?
I like being surrounded by nice things. I don’t see myself as a “collector.” I like the idea of owning something unique (even if it’s printed art).

Neck Face is one of my favorites; I have several pieces from the man. I love the way Scott Campbell and Wes Lang push their tattooist skills to become real artists. I love my “Rammellzee” by Todd “Reas” James. I love Misaki Kawai from Japan, Team Macho from Toronto, ERS from Belgium, 2Shy, Fuzi UVTPK and Jean André from France. As a Frenchie, it’s impossible for me not to have key street art legends Mode 2 and André. Mode 2 did a big piece for me, a roller girl in front of the Eiffel Tower, 100 percent Parisian! I have André’s classic Mickey with a dick… I also have photos from Dimitri Coste and Tim Barber—photographers I can share a vision with. And last but not least, I have lots of stuff from So Me—drawings, prints, photos, dirty socks and all. I was lucky to ask some of those artists to work on a piece around the Eiffel tower theme.

What is your favorite piece in your collection?
It’s really hard to choose. They are very different from each other. One I love, is a totem by Belgian crew ERS. Colonel, 2Shy, RVO, etc.—all on one piece of wood.
What art would you like to add to your collection?
I’d love to have more photos, but I don’t have enough walls.
Do you collect anything besides art?
I have a bunch of records, but not really a collection. I started to collect magnets from all the cities I visited during my tours, but my wife almost kicked me out of the apartment. My fridge’s door was full…
What did you collect as a kid?
Not much… maybe my boogers! Oh yes, I used to collect all the Powell Peralta ads from Thrasher and Transworld; I still have some!
