Apple’s skeletons in the closet

Here’s one from the wayback machine! Apples Emate. We were trying to recall this “green clamshell thing” Apple came out with a while ago and could not remember it. Boy ,they have come a long way! The one thing that is interesting according to the wiki page on the Emate is that the device is described as a “low-cost Laptop” (running the Newton operating system. Could this be the first Netbook (minus the net)? Those Apple folks were always ahead of their time.

  1. Yes, the eMate could be considered a “netbook”, if internet access is one of the determining factors. Using the Newton Internet Enabler and either a PCMCIA modem or ethernet card, the eMate (and other Newton devices from the same period) could connect, browse, email, Telnet, and even FTP. All of this in a sexy, translucent, and rugged portable computer. Minus the net? Heck no.
