fragiles design miami

Heading to Miami for... why do you go to Miami? Here's a reason Fragiles by Die Gestalten at Design Miami
December 6 – 9, 2007
"Fragiles is an eclectic collection of contemporary porcelain, ceramic and glass objects by a new wave of designers who are manifesting their creative visions out of fragile materials. Fragiles presents over fifty innovative objects that expand and challenge our notion of these classical materials and centuries of tradition by simultaneously exploring a new aesthetic approach and technological boundaries. From experimental and avant-garde to evocative retro-inspired reinterpretations, these cutting-edge examples indicate how visual culture and high tech production processes are influencing and reshaping this delicate territory in pioneering ways."

global warming attire

I know its fall, and we are heading for winter(I hope), who knows what to expect with the global warming thing. The fashion industry is up in arms on what to wear, dear lord!
Anyway, I predict the blazer/hoody trend of yesterday, will be replaced with the the blazer wind-breaker possible hoody combo, lite, yet....layered. Here is the first, Prada nylon windbreaker, mentioned in this months British GQ.
go buy now: AUREL SCHMIDT

Normally I would not do this, as some things I like to keep to myself. But, the mood is good today.
Aurel Schmidt is an amazing Canadian-born artist living in NYC. She is kind of hot and her work is ridiculously dope. SuperTouch just put together a nice little spread on her, so you can familiarize yourself. She just had a great show, Burnouts, that was a one night happening at one of the Deitch Projects directors places. Anyway, for an affordable $30, this signed poster can be yours. Pick up a copy of her book while you are at it.

where you won't find the "next banksy"

The Telegraph has a moderately interesting article on the street art market and how it is blowing up. So much so, that Sotheby's in London is dedicating an entire section of its December 12th Contemporary auction to Street Art.
I guess it is time to turn off my inner voices that keep telling me to doubt, and just embrace the success of the artists that I have watched go from unknown to mildly famous in some circles. I just hope that the 'street' artists do not lose the sight of what made them initially identifiable, which after all was the street.
And as far as the "next Banksy" goes, I don't think you will be able to find them until after 2012, and certainly not in the street.

what's up next

UPnext, discover your city in 3D! Its pretty cool and one of my favorite features is the ability to click on the buildings and see who's in them! The bright glowing spots are events, restaurants and bars. It is a cool site but the big thing it needs is speed, the load is a bit slow. Like all new technologies it will be that way at first. And so we wait.

Rich and Dead

According to BrandChannel, Forbes magazine's,“Top-Earning Dead Celebrities” ranking thirteen deceased individuals whom each brought in a healthy US$ 247 million in twelve months. Celebrity death can even bring new life to fading personality brands.
For example " the accidental overdose of Anna Nicole Smith, and the carnival-like atmosphere of the ensuing paternity dispute, provided far more publicity for the television reality show star than she garnered while alive." I am not sure what is worse the article or the fact this is standard practice in the industry. Either way its pretty discusting to think that there are so many people making money off of corpses.
furniture you need

"The Stern", designed by Ligne Roset, sideboards with drawers and/or doors, with a structure in multi-ply, finished in walnut veneer. Top, rear and fronts finished in a choice of gloss white, taupe or anthracite lacquer. This is a beautiful unique piece of furniture you need for your home!

Cunt Coloring Book by Tee Corinne. Hmmm, this weekend I was looking for some books to buy on campus and I came across this one. Published by Last Gasp, and features "Over 3 dozen cunts of every size and description for you to color. Originally used for a sex-education class. Crayons not included." So I ask the question, who buys it? Or better yet who do you buy it for! Also available at amazon.
David Ellis' new kinetic sculpture

A new kinetic sculpture by David Ellis debuted at the current installation show 'Heap' in London. From the outside, the sculpture resemebles a human crouched on their knees. However on the inside, which on first glance seems like a storage space, Trash and cans come alive.
WallCandy has a great in-depth slideshow of the show through all stages of the installation. More photos here

10 mil + 50cent= dead soldiers and a bat mitzvah

"The former CEO of the leading supplier of body armor to U.S. soldiers in Iraq was charged yesterday with looting the company to bankroll a lavish lifestyle that included a $10 million bat mitzvah for his daughter.
In addition to the bat mitzvah - which included performances by Aerosmith, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Kenny G and the Eagles - prosecutors said David Brooks got the firm, DHB Industries, to pay for other goodies....He allegedly reaped $185 million by selling DHB stock when he learned that 6,000 bullet-proof vests the company made were about to be recalled for being faulty and not able to block bullets" Via the NYPOST. This has to be my favorite quote from the article..."In honor of the band's appearance, Brooks changed from a black leather suit into a magenta suede biker outfit covered with chains."

Just in case you were worried about Morrissey's show tonight, meaning the opening act Kristeen, was fired! That's right canned, let go , kicked to the curb. a dope toaster

I am over 10-month's late on this one.
Glide, designed by George Watson of the UK is the dopest toaster I have seen. While it does not seem to be in production yet as it was the winner of Design Boom's ceramics for breakfast competition. My only beef is that it does not seem to be expandable for bagels, or for that matter toaster muffins. I'll buy one anyway though, once it is made.

the tramp stamp alternative

The november issue of British GQ, has asked the age old question, "Do tattooed girls always spell a good time?". In my humble opinion, now that tattoo's are almost excepted everywhere on the coasts, Its more of a combination of factor's. Type of tattoo, definitely the location of the tattoo, and where you meet the girl. Say backstage at a Poison concert=tramp. I saw a girl on the train the other day with a tattoo on here leg about the ankle and.... her and her tattoo made her look like a biatch. Don't ask me why there was something about the tattoo, it looked like a symbol from star trek/ or a crown. She just looked a bit out of place.
So if you need to know GQ's take... check out the November issue.
kid nation with gene parmeshawn

Hey there you pork bellied Barry Badrinaths, this week's Kid Nation was more exciting than an HJ, a BJ, hell even more thrilling than the last ZJ I got (and kids, if you don't know what a ZJ is, you can't afford one). I'm gonna cut to the chase here and skip all gobbeldy-gook I normally lather all over your pre-pubescent ears: DK, the Donkey Kong who ruled Bonanza while blazing barrels was threatening to leave at this week's town hall meeting. In a heated intervention on Taylor, just as Sophia screamed "Go Home Slut!!!" DK was the only pioneer to come to her defense. Not so much because he likes her, I mean who could like that beaver toothed, won't go to the well to get water, uppity southern prig? That's right, no one could like you, now fire your parents. But in his own words DK chose to leave because, "I can't stand all the hate!" Lucky for our doo rag sporting DK there was nothin' but love for him in the town of Bonanza. After a moving sing-a-long of John Lennon inspired "Give Bonanza a Chance" and a private talk with newly elected official Guylan (a free ZJ perhaps?) DK decided to stick it out in Bonanza. Which was good choice indeed, cause the council already decided to award him this week's gold star. And as host Jonathan so eloquently puts it; this week's star, just like all the others, "is worth its weight in gold! Literally." Happy gold star DK, don't melt too much down for your grill, save some for your Halloween costume dog. I'm Gene Parmeshawn sayin' I make pasta taste better!
ignite what's next: stop in dc

There has been this art tour, Ignite What's Next, (sponsored by faves Upper Playground and Juxtapoz with Sparks as well) that has been going on for quite some time. Due to the extent of the tour I lacked a post. However when I read the crew (Saber, David Choe, and Retna) did a stop in my native D.C., I thought it was time to give a shout. Really I just wanted to post this photo of the artists in front of the old Murder Capital's Capitol.

"trashford"-willamsburg brooklyn

Its almost the weekend and that means that it will be impossible to walk down Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg, some people call "Sidewalk Commerce" , I call it "shit for sale". If you ever try to walk down the streets on the weekend you want to kill yourself dodging all the crappy "vendors"(rich kids selling there crap). And to top it off reading the post on The Gowanus Lounge about the merchant yelling "no photo's". I am sorry "I am not trying to take photo's of your shit!".

banksy on auction at Bonham's

While the hammer has not hit on all pieces just yet at Bonham's, Banksy is still killing estimates.
There has been speculation on the sheer quickness that his market increased in the recent year. Though I would have normally agreed with the naysayer's , I can no longer agree. I am sold on the market value of a Banksy piece. From what I can date, Banksy became an international commodity after U.S. Esquire featured him in the genius issue, December 2005. His work was solid in these days prior to the article, just more genuine. And these are the pieces that are doing well because they are the most scarce. The pieces that people bought because they liked them, and there was thought behind them. Not the pieces that you had to buy, because it was Banksy, and there was a buck to be made.

its not your normal whitewash

Whitewashed and re-branded porcelain vases by Karen Ryan. Below a short statement...
My latest design is ‘UNMADE 07’, this is a comment about mass production and Global branding. I have created my own brand logo ‘UNMADE 07’, this brand represents the unmaking of existing discarded objects which in this case are old vases. The original glazed surface of the exterior of the vase is removed except where the brand logo is left cut out of the remaining decoration, whilst the function of the vase remains intact.

young frankenstein: the musical

Friday night had me at the new Mel Brooks musical Young Frankenstein. At first I was skeptical, since singing and dancing really do not do it for me. After 15 minutes and first glance on Frankenstein's assistant (the blonde, above) I was sold. The sets are incredible, it is funny, and that says a lot because I have a very limited sense of humor. It is tough to find tickets, so be ready to pay double. But, see it anyway.

"The Grooved Spheres" Over the last few decades, miners in South Africa have been digging up mysterious metal spheres. Origin unknown, these spheres measure approximately an inch or so in diameter, and some are etched with three parallel grooves running around the equator. Two types of spheres have been found: one is composed of a solid bluish metal with flecks of white; the other is hollowed out and filled with a spongy white substance. The kicker is that the rock in which they where found is Precambrian - and dated to 2.8 billion years old! Who made them and for what purpose is unknown.

kid nation with gene parmesean

Aloha Kid Nation nation! This week’s episode “Viva La Revolucion!” was an apt title, as Bonanza City would be asking not what Kid Nation can do for you but what can you do for your Kid Nation (other than shirking those party-pooping child labor laws)? Unlike the original founders of Bonanza City who ran the show from the minute their wagons rolled into town until the last left for greener pastures (Phoenix, I think), the Town Council’s seats are up for grabs after 4 glorious weeks of unbounded rule. Challengers were allowed to come from within each district and boy did they attack. Zach took on Taylor, our very own Santana in miniature Guylan had his eyes on Mike’s seat (who argued somewhat effectively that Guylan’s 2 eyes could never compete with his 4) and with a smile and a knife in the back Olivia came after Anjay’s position.

shepard fairey tuesday: panther power

On the verge of an epic european show in London, Shepard today drops Panther Power. The image reminds me of the bikinied chick from Live or Let Die, but she has a turtleneck on. Maybe it was cold.
Faile crushes estimates at sotheby's auction

What a year this has been for Brooklyn's Faile. These two pieces, SAVAGE WORLD LONDON STENCIL and STUDIO B TEST IN BLACK IN BLUE #3, were brought to auction at Sotheby's by dealer Steve Lazarides and conveniently sandwiched between a couple Banksy's. ghada amer's gardens

Last night, I had the privilege to visit the studio of Ghada Amer. While I had only been aware of her large, stitched canvasses, Ghada was generous enough to show some of the installation work she had done in the past. Most interesting were all of the garden's she has designed. Above is the Ying-Yang Garden, installed at the 2005 Venice Biennale.

shepard fairey e pluribus venom, the book

This exciting new book published by Gingko Press is available for pre-order from Amazon
From the publisher...
E Pluribus Venom collects a large body of work produced by Shepard Fairey and presented at the Jonathan Levine gallery during his massive exhibition in the summer of 2007. Serving as more than just an exhibition catalog, this book expounds upon themes presented in the show. The title E Pluribus Venom which translates Out of many, poison is derived from E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one) an early motto adopted by the U.S. Government which appears on U.S. currency. The artist s thesis is that many becoming one, or a loss of power and influence of the individual in favor of homogeny is a symptom of a society in decline. E Pluribus Venom is comprised of artworks designed to question the symbols and methods of the American machine and American dream and also celebrate those who oppose blind nationalism and war. Some of Fairey s works use currency motifs or a Norman Rockwell aesthetic to employ the graphic language of the subjects they critique. Other works use a blend of Art Nouveau, hippie, and revolutionary propaganda styles to celebrate subjects advocating peace.

apple buys domino building

No just kidding but according to curbed, "The huge Brooklyn Apple store mystery takes a turn today with news that they're looking at the big retail space that will be part of The Edge condo development rising on Kent Avenue with "wide open views." Lois Weiss reports in the Post that Apple is looking at a 3,000-5,000 foot corner space and Barneys is eyeballing 9,000 square feet. Racked, meanwhile, which dropped the original Apple to Brooklyn bomb, opines: "Color us impressed, surprised, and a bit confounded."

lighting is everything

You can use lighting to create, manipulate and change a room, emotion, and an/or experience. Furniture designer, Yodo Kurosawa has two cultural backgrounds, Japanese and Finnish, he lives and works in Lahti (Finland) while continuing his master’s degree at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
Yodo has created an amazing fixture that creates a backdrop to Star Trek on your ceiling. In his words..."There are film and halogen lamp hanging from ceiling. When halogen lamp is turned on, the film reflects light from halogen lamp to the ceiling. The film replaces a mirror surface and cover halogen lamp when lamp is turned off."
kid nation with gene parmesean

Hey there flappers and fatties, Gene Parmesean here with your newest installment of Kid Nation. Just as I thought this show couldn’t come any closer to the heart of Humanity’s eternal struggle, the ontological quest we’ve grappled with since man’s fall; the Pioneers of Bonanza city teach us something new: Religious Tolerance. As if cleaning up after Yellow or consistently losing to Blue or just having a four-eyes like Mike as your district leader wasn’t bad enough, the denizens of Bonanza City are forced by their increasingly demagogic Town Council to recognize religious services and even worse, not just cross-denominational but with, like, Jews and Hindus and stuff…….gross!! But while the town council was wondering if there’d be enough cookies and orange drink for the Pioneers and all their Gods (Apparently Hindus have like fourteen thousand million Gods or something) the town took their own vote and decided to skip out. And the down time would be critical because this week’s challenge would be the thinking man’s challenge. Just like in the Old West, to prove once and for all which District is the smartest they called a puzzle-party. And not just any puzzle-party; continuing with the religious theme, the Pioneers would be assembling a gigantic puzzle of a church. Once again Anjay proved his district as the perfect storm of pioneers; with both brawn and brain they destroyed the competition and took back the upper class. The race for last would be the most interesting as Yellow narrowly beat out Green to be the cooks. Luckily both were finished with enough time for the town to receive the Bonus Prize, or what I like to call the ‘Boner’ Prize; cause every time the Council gets a shot at something cool they turn into a bunch of boners. This week was no different as they allowed the town to ruin it for themselves, voting en masse for a set of religious books over a miniature golf course. Let’s count this one out Bonanza City: so far you could have a water slide, cable tv, miniature golf and a pizza party. Instead you got a barrel of cocoa and a bible… boners indeed. Until next time, stay sleazy you taco crotches.
the art market

The week has been so busy that I have not even had time to read New York mag. Honestly, I don't even know if it has arrived. In a diversion from craziness, I went on their site today and was happy to find this section dedicated to/questioning the current Art Market. What is funny, is that I have been reading Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art and was thinking that it sounded all too familiar. The Jerry Saltz article, Has Money Ruined Art?, is a must read. Enjoy

the hives are back

The Hives were in NYC last night and were amazing. I have to say they are only a few bands out there that you look forward to hearing new material such as radiohead, (onsale today btw). The new songs were great and the show was live as ever.
The best part was when a band gets big, so do the jocks, and even better when they fight, and get kicked out it clears a path to the front of the stage like moses parting the red sea.
This photo is not for last nights show (from Eurockeennes, Belfort) but its from this tour. Photo taken by Rob or his flickr account. He has some amazing work so check it out. Twbe will be getting the advance of the new album today and we will let you know if it is as good as we think.(oct 14 release)

Chuck Close has an opening tomorrow night, Family and Others, at London's prestigious White Cube. His 7' x 9' portrait study of Bill Clinton will be unveiled to the public as well. Men's Vogue sat down with the artist prior to this great event. NSFW, but safe for the bathroom. Rated X, the Panty Party. Check out Ambrel recent photo essay on naked NYC kids/adults having a good time drinking and probably doing drugs and each other.
the new pirated material

In the beginning you stole music, now you steal the images. Via Men.Style, Brendan Donnelly, the designer proclaims " ....Homemade—and definitely not band-approved. "I guess I'm going to keep going until I get a cease-and-desist order,". It's a great idea and the shirts look cool, but after I saw the model in the photo of the Joy Division shirt, I felt ill. She annoyed me so much that it made the products look "tried" to me. It looks like he found his models off of Bedford avenue. So to recap, the shirts look cool but..... his original designs(non-band logo art) are much better and worth wearing!

The trailer for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, gathers his entire crew of usual suspects and themes, much like a Wes Anderson film does. Johnny Depp? Check. Helena Bonham Carter? Check. Biggie Smalls was the illest

You may or may not have heard that Hollywood is doing a movie on Biggie Smalls. But, who will play the part of the famous dead rapper? Over the weekend there was a casting call for the main part in NYC. Around 100 people showed up, which to be honest does not sound like that much. Anyway, NyTimes has a slideshow of some of the candidates. My pick is above. (Thanks Hallie!)
birds the sequel
There is something really wrong about 5000 birds in a car, or why you would have that many. What desire would you need to do something like this? Is it art? Were they captured in Italy? Possibly Venice? It's the same old story, drive your pet out into the country and let him go...... Is that what's happening here? A lot of questions.
barry mcgee - advanced mature work

Over the weekend the enablist had the pleasure of being in Los Angeles. Moments before the departing flight back east, I was able to stop by an incredible exhibit at REDCAT in the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. The exhibit to speak of was, Advanced Mature Work, by Modern Art master, Barry Mcgee. If you live anywhere within a 200 mile radius, go see it. So dope.
David win's as in David and Goliath

As of Thursday, retailers have sold more Nintendo Wii videogame consoles than Microsoft(MSFT) Xbox 360s, despite the latter videogame console being available a year longer, a tracking firm said.
While not confirmed by either company, gaming metrics Web site Vgchartz.com said retailers have sold 10.57 million Wiis, and 10.51 million Xbox 360s. Both totals are about two and a half times the 4.32 million Sony PlayStation 3s sold.

rattlesnake tequila

Gene Parmesan's brother, Chester Copperpot, arrived on the East Coast last night. With him came our favorite indulgence, rattlesnake tequila. Bought in Mexico out of a barrel, rattlesnake tequila tastes like cinnamon and is smoother than a glass of water. The key ingredient is a rattlesnake that is chopped up fresh and thrown into a vat of whatever white tequila is available at the time. Good stuff.

kid nation with gene parmesean

This week’s KN began with a bang as perennial baddass from blue Greg shouted a tapestry of curse words over Bonanza City. Take note of this townsfolk, Greg does not take kindly to criticism, especially about how he chooses to rudely wake you up at 7am. And from that point the excitement never stopped; after a raucous night of prairie fires and root beers in the saloon the town council was forced to enact a 9:30pm curfew which was ill-received at best. During its introduction much needed help was given by Colton, a young firebrand from District Yellow who urged everyone to “Accept the Curfew and Drop it!” Hey, shutting everyone up was how Michael earned his gold star and there ain’t no shame in copying an older kid, good on ya Colt! But despite this and sacrificing his body to single handedly win the Upper Class for District Yellow, he was passed over for the holiest of holies, the golden star (suspiciously dropped form 25g’s to 20 g’s). No this week would truly be one focused on the younger folks of Bonanza City, with Yellow finally winning Upper Class as the youngest district it was only fitting to recognize another one of the little people. Yes fans, it’s Mallory’s time to shine. The town council colluded with her older sister Olivia to give young Mallory a special present on her upcoming birthday, one that would make every future birthday present she receives wreak of insufficiency; a $20,000 star, worth its weight in gold. Here’s to many happy returns Mallory! Until next time, keep practicing those Swayze Missiles!
josh keyes: surface tension

Scamper, 24" x 18"
Garnering great interest, Josh Keyes' new exhibition Surface Tension—which opens at Hang Art in San Francisco—is an exploration into " the shrinking surface of ice that the polar bears roam on, but also the political and ecological tension on the surface of the Earth." The paintings, in classic Keyes form are hyper-real with stark white backgrounds. If you are in San Francisco between October 4th and October 31st, this is a must see. More images after the jump.

the thought project

The Thought Project, by Danish photographer Simon Høgsberg, is a study of the thoughts people have when they walk alone in the street. Over a period of 3 months, the photographer approached 150 strangers on the streets of Copenhagen and New York and asked them what they had been thinking about the moment before he stopped them. Using a Dictaphone, he recorded what they said and then took a picture of them. 55 of the 150 thoughts are represented verbatim within the resulting project, a compelling piece of work that becomes an addictive read.

It is nice to see that smart rap stars invest in, and appreciate quality art (Kanye too). More pics after the jump. via, highsnobiety from BBC

Michael Townsend, 36, said he and seven other artists built the 750-square-foot apartment beginning in 2003 and lived there for up to three weeks at a time.

The Cult's new album "Born into This", comes out today, a viral video is also making the rounds which combines footage of the uprising in Burma with THE CULT's "Tiger in the Sun" from "Born into This". the web is at a standstill, new radiohead?

Radiohead will sell downloads of their new album In Rainbows from October 10 – eight weeks ahead of its physical equivalent – at whatever price you might care to pay for it. On October 10 go to their site and click on the question mark beside the price field for In Rainbows and it merely says, “It’s up to you.” There’s no doubt that thousands of people will pay price of a happy meal for the download. Presumably though, Tom Yorke and the boys, argument runs that those people would have obtained the album through file sharing websites. If this experiment works, it will – at the click of a few million mice – make them the most powerful band in Britain.
