bored

Bored at work, why not waste the day looking busy, "doing research", playing the FameGame. FameGame rates New Yorkers' notoriety based on an "Attention Metric"*, extrapolated from "industry parties, blogs, select media institutions, and people they've been pictured with". A photo op with Forrest Whitaker (47.5%) could trump the Times profiling your Nuts4Nuts-cart empire. Blah, blah blah blah, blaahhhh. Via The Thrillist
monkey on your back

The Monkey Bar, that is, which soft re-launched last night.
Opened inside the Hotel Elysee in 1936 (and a favorite of Hollywood luminaries like Ava Gardner), the legendary spot shut down in March for an overhaul that would make it sleeker, hipper, less steak-y and more Asian. When you enter off 54th Street, you'll find the bar area's trademark yellow wallpaper (full of playful monkeys, elephants and tuxedoed gents) and low-riding leather armchairs intact and take a sip of a Blueberry Joes: tequila, coffee and muddled blueberry.

The Bad Brains are a coming. They are playing on a boat in NYC on June 25th (a Rocks Off cruise I assume) - kind of insane. They're playing the School of Rock Fest in NJ the day before. So mark your calendar!

Camouflage house

Set among shrubs and budding fir trees, this home has been encased in a façade matching the greenery around it. The concealing mesh is permeable to let the sunshine filter onto the house. But it also allows the light from inside to radiate out. Allowing the build to sit anonymously by day, but emerge discretely at night. Blurring the boundaries between what is human, and what is not. Via AP, Hmmmmmmmm bacon. MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Meet Monster Pig. An 11-year-old Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail. Think hams as big as car tires. "It feels really good," Jamison, of Pickensville, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "It's a good accomplishment. I probably won't ever kill anything else that big."
RAD SHOES

Today could not be a happier day as Vans has announced that it will be coming out with three shoes to commemorate one of the best movies ever made, 'Rad'. The shoes colorways reflect the colors of the teams racing in that momentous race "Helltrack", Rad Racing in red, Bart Conners team (black & gold) and Nature? Earth? in (brown & blue). These shoes will apparently be available at all superior Vans stores. via HighSnobiety

solo faile show

We were going to wait to drop this, but as the nature of the internet goes it will soon be everywhere. Beginning June 7th and lasting four days, Brooklyn-based art collective Faile will be holding a solo show in an undisclosed location. Following the tactics of Banksy last fall and employing their mutual dealer Steve Lazirides to handle the biz, "With Love and Kisses, Nothing Lasts Forever" will consist of 30 large canvases and who knows what else. With prices climbing into solid 5 figures for the work, the londoners will be swooping in to buy up everything with their strong, obnoxious currency. (so jealous). Check WoosterCollective, the Gothamist, and Faile for the location on June 6th.
miss

After a hard fought battle, Miss Japan Riyo Mori was crowned Miss Universe 2007 by a panel of distinguished judges that included Dave Navarro and Tony Romo. While she was beautiful, my vote went to runner-up Miss Brazil who was by far Miss Universe caliber. She will always be a winnner to me
Eco friendly restuarant

Cafe Habana has added a new bundle of joy to the family: Habana Outpost. Located in Brooklyn. Everything you see is recycled, from the hospitable picnic tables in the garden to the old truck they have turned into a functioning kitchen. And, yes, the outpost has the same delicious grilled corn as the Nolita locations and does a mean brunch. Inside and out, Habana Outpost is an explosion of color. The atmosphere, like the food, offers the best in what they call, "traditional Latin fare with a unique Cuban and Central Mexican twist." As though the food and bright atmosphere weren't enough, the Outpost hosts a bevy of weekly activities: free movies every Sunday at 8pm, weekend markets designed to support local businesses and monthly art and design exhibits, and events for the kids. diary

In the preface to her new book Dear Diary, Lesley Arfin writes, “Wanna see your future? This book is my whole life, and, give or take a few ridiculous circumstances, it’s yours, too. Here’s how it goes: you grow up in Long Island. First you’re cool. Then you’re not. Everyone hates you, and you get so insecure you start suppressing emotions by giving hand jobs and inhaling whippets. Then come the bad-girl years. Sound familiar?”
Arfin’s debut tome is comprised of the author’s own diary entries from age 12 to 24, updates from her current 28-year-old perspective, and interviews with people from her past. “This is every teenage girl’s story,” Arfin explains. What follows, however, during those “bad-girl” years, is not every girl’s story – which makes “Dear Diary” irresistible to many, even if it’s written primarily for 15-year-old girls.
After discovering sex, drugs and punk rock growing up in Syosset (on Long Island), Arfin attended Hampshire College. There, her drug use took off. “I even saw a therapist during my last year of college, and she said that every time I did dope, I had to tell her. So every week, I told her I had done dope. I told her I needed it to relax, and she suggested I replace heroin with kava kava. Nice try,” Arfin writes.... Read more of this article at psychoPedia.com

While there is a set of six prints releasing today at Obey Giant and some wallpaper may look good in my rat-hole Brooklyn apartment, we will not bother ourselves with this. Upcoming in one month is Shepard's return to NYC at Jonathan Levine Gallery. The show will be split up into two spaces, the first being an installation space opening in Brooklyn on Thursday June 21st and then the gallery in NYC opening on Saturday the 23rd. Guaranteed to be a blockbuster show Shepard has begun promoting it by creating currency (19,000 pieces to be exact) that will be crumpled and distributed on the streets of nY and L.A. A gorgeous scavenger hunt. With a June that is packed full of art (venice biennale, faile, porch show, bast) Shepards return will be momentous.

prison food

Italian Prisons don't bring to mind anything pleasing and most people would do anything possible to stay out of one. However there is one prison outside of Pisa that people are clamoring to get into. Inside of the 500-year-old Fortezza Medicea resides a restaurant like no other in the world. Behind its maximum security shell, criminals cook and serve delicious food in a quaint chamber-like restaurant. Maybe a little Filetto di Manzo. Leave it to the Italians to make me hungry. via NTDWA

release
This is an excerpt from an interview that was emailed to me. The interview is with Trent Reznor, regarding releasing music on major labels. it looks like he is following the example set by Prince, he is not changing his name, but he is stretching the gaps in a contract to the extreme, and setting new standards in marketing and integrity.
Given all that, do you have any idea how to approach the release of your next album?
I've have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal. Come see the show and buy a T-shirt if you like it. I would put out a nicely packaged merchandise piece, if you want to own a physical thing. And it would come out the day that it's done in the studio, not this "Let's wait three months" bulls---.
When your US label, Interscope, discovered the web-based alternate reality game (ARG) you'd built around Year Zero, were they happy for the free marketing or angry you hadn't let them in on it?
I chose to do this on my own, at great financial expense to myself, because I knew they wouldn't understand what it is, for one. And secondly, I didn't want it coming from a place of marketing, I wanted it coming from a place that was pure to the project. It's a way to present the story and the backdrop, something I would be excited to find as a fan. I knew the minute I talked to someone at the record label about it, they would be looking at it in terms of "How can we tie this in with a mobile provider?" That's what they do. If something lent itself to that, OK, I'm not opposed to the idea of not losing a lot of money (laughs). But it would only be if it made sense. I've had to position myself as the irrational, stubborn, crazy artist. At the end of the day, I'm not out to sabotage my career, but quality matters, and integrity matters. Jumping through any hoop or taking advantage of any desperate situation that comes up just to sell a product is harmful. It is.
Is the Year Zero ARG something labels will copy now?
Well, their response, when they saw that it did catch on like wildfire, was "Look how smart we are the way we marketed this record". That's the feedback I've gotten -- other artists who've met with that label ask 'em about it: "Yeah, you like what we did for Trent? Look what we did for Trent". They've then gone on to try to buy the company that did it to apply it to all their other acts. So, glad I could help them out. I'm sure they still don't understand what it is that we did or why it worked. But I will look forward to the Black Eyed Peas ARG, that should be amazing.

Defense Department Blocks YouTube, MySpace Access
Military Personnel Banned From Using 13 'Entertainment' Web Sites.
(CBS) DENVER Soldiers serving overseas will lose some of their online links to friends and loved ones back home under a Department of Defense policy that a high-ranking Army official said would take effect Monday.
The Defense Department will begin blocking access "worldwide" to YouTube, MySpace and 11 other popular Web sites on its computers and networks, according to a memo sent Friday by Gen. B.B. Bell, the U.S. Forces Korea commander.
The policy is being implemented to protect information and reduce drag on the department's networks, according to Bell.
"This recreational traffic impacts our official DoD network and bandwidth ability, while posing a significant operational security challenge," the memo said.
The military says it's worried that personal use on military computers is stealing bandwidth and perhaps hampering operations, reports CBS News correspondent Steve Kathan. They're also concerned that too much information may be getting out.

In the outstanding movie Children of Men there is a scene where in the Palace of Fine Arts there is a huge section of wall cut out and placed on display. The Owner of a pub in England has followed suit and placed protective glass/plastic/plexiglass over the image of Kissing Coppers. Outstanding! what the frills?

I am kind of jealous and totally appalled that there is a course in graffiti at Parsons. The true beef is that it is called "geek graffiti", which I guess in a way is what street art is. But seriously.
"The main goal of this course is to learn to look upon our surroundings in a new way. It is my aim that by the end of this course you will walk around the city differently than when it started. You will know you are getting there when you start to annoy your friends by interrupting conversations to stop and take a photo of what looks to them to be a mess of ink.
In GEEK GRAFFITI we will also be making things designed to exist within the city. Succesful projects will use the urban environment as a unique medium and answer the follow questions:
"Why is it important that this is outdoors? Would this be any good if it weren't? Why does it matter that this is done where and how it was? How is this new and, most importantly, why should I care?"

kswiss gradient

So I have not owned a pair of Kswiss, since highschool, but this shoe is a contender. You can find it on the UK site, so that may mean its not going to be available in the good old U.S. of A. The Ansel Adams gray scale on white is the best part of all, they also come in a gradient of blue and gray on black.
footnote to the current debate about russia

For a year, beginning in July 2004, Simon Roberts travelled over 75,000 kilometres across the largest country on the globe. He visited the forgotten extremities of Russia’s vast territory, journeying to the Far East - Sakhalin Island, Magadan and Chukotka - through the Siberian provinces, across to Russia’s Western-most point, Kaliningrad; down to the Caucasus, along the Volga River and to the Altai Republic where Russia borders China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.
The resulting project, entitled Motherland, is meant as a humble footnote to the current debate about Russian identity at a time of major geo-political, economic and social change within Russia.

shepard fairey tuesday

Does the man ever stop? No. Shepard Fairey's work ethic is unbelievable and he just keeps churning works out. Here is a quip from the man about today's prints. Hostile Takeover. two colorway's. red and black(detail above).
Since I know that people don’t pay close attention to things and tend to jump to conclusions, I’m going to give a preventative explanation of the new print. No, even though I often make jokes about Obey Giant’s world domination, I’m not saying that Obey Giant is committing a HOSTILE TAKEOVER or creating a NEW WORLD ORDER. If you look at the eye on the hand, it is framed by a round American flag banner. The piece is a comment on U.S. economic and cultural imperialism. The image is part of the negative side of a piece called “Two Sides Of Capitalism”. There actually is a positive side. Stay tuned for more.

outdoor bar list

Looking for a place to drink outdoors after the grind? A60("above 60"), on top of the hotel 60thompson(above photo) Gridskipper has compiled a list of the need to know outdoor bars..."Finally, spring is arriving in New York -- about halfway through the actually calendar season. The abrupt (and let us hope, relatively permanent) transition promises a weekend of New Yorkers seeking outdoor venues for eatin', drinkin', and relaxaratin'. Best get out there and enjoy it before the muggy subwayway train of summer arrives and makes us all sluggish and torpid. Though you can find sidewalk seating and makeshift gardens all over the five boroughs, we've compiled a list of NYC gardens and patios where you can enjoy the beauty of spring and a decent meal (and/or drink) at the same time."

Josh Keyes paints and draws really well. On top of that he is so very conscious of the environment. The images that he produces are hyperreal and surrounded by a stark white.
"My intention is to create work that asks questions about the implications of urban sprawl and its impact on the environment. I am interested in creating psychological narratives set in closed systems that express the behavior of and the interaction between humans and animals. The dystopian model creates a dynamic playing field where I can experiment with these ideas and forms. "

Guerilla store

With just one month until the NYC ICFF show, designer Tobias Wong's plans for a guerilla store are on track. "What were we thinking? Just because it’s a temporary 2-month store we didn’t have to be insured? WRONG! And after much research, no-one would sell us coverage for less than a year, and certainly not without a full central alarm system.... Thankfully, a private sponsor and collector stepped in and rescued the project by offering to take care of the insurance and alarm system. So now we’re back on track." ancient Japanese craftsmanship and R2 Collaboration

Tokyo, Japan May 2, 2007 – Combining ancient Japanese craftsmanship with the Star Wars universe, Kotobukiya produces one of the most unique exclusives to be found at Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles - Kiriko Glassware.
Traditional Japanese glass etching technique, known as Kiriko, has been in existence since in Edo (present-day Tokyo) since 1824, when artisans first began experimenting with emery powder to produce glassware engraved with patterns. As Kiriko developed during the Meiji era (mid-19th century), the craft went through many revisions, such as utilizing new equipment introduced from the west, while still retaining the time-honored Japanese techniques utilized until this day.
