p_frost.jpg

Phil Frost makes paintings and sculptures that usually are a result of collaging and layering of images, along with the formation of hand-made, often symmetrical black and white patterns. These patterns, which are created with painstaking detail and using correction fluid as a medium, offer an appearance that oscillates between modernist designs and primitivism, abstraction and representation.

Frost's intensive approach toward every object he works on, whether it is the surface of a white canvas or a found object in the streets of New York, invariably result in a dense layering of forms and tightly knitted designs that conform richly complex compositions that engage and change before the eyes of the viewer. Frost's patterns often appear as arcane codes and a language of its own, composed of symbols such as letters, hearts, dots and mask-like forms.

In 2005 Frost's work was shown along side that of Picasso, Dali, Magritte and Warhol in a New York show tracing the History of the written word in works of art during the last century.

Available now are three prints (16"x20") in an edition of 100 each for $375. Get them here

showdown.jpg

"In a new initiative to generate more exposure for the artists in Your Gallery and Stuart, and to spotlight their work to as wide an audience as possible, we have created SHOWDOWN." -Saatchi Gallery

SHOWDOWN is for all registered Your Gallery and Stuart artists to enter their works for visitors to score. The winner of the final head-to-head vote will receive £1000 and the runner up will receive £750. The winning work will go on display at the new Saatchi gallery.

Any visitor to the site can rate and vote for artworks in SHOWDOWN.

All visitors are free to vote on all artworks, scoring them from one to ten (one being the lowest score and ten the highest).

Although visitors can vote for as many artworks that have been entered as they like, to prevent multiple voting by one person for one work, only one vote per individual artwork will be accepted from each visitor.

The artworks are displayed randomly and constantly rotate. Each time an artwork is rated by clicking on a star to register a vote a new random artwork is displayed. To see more images please click on the ‘Click here to see more images’ displayed on the SHOWDOWN homepage.

bomb it

tag.jpg

Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this friday, Bomb-it is a graffiti documentary for the 21st century. An art movement that spans the globe, graffiti is getting it's cred once again. I particularly enjoy this quote from Pablo Picasso,
"Graffiti belongs to everyone and no one. On a section of a condemned wall, I put up a graffito... a bank director stopped the construction work, had my carving cut out as a fresco and inlayed it in the wall of his apartment."
Sounds like Banksy to me

Banksy Banksy Banksy

blurbanksy.jpeg

Banksy's self portrait went to auction today and we predicted that it would trump its estimate of 30 to 40 thousand pounds. Well it did. We gave a high estimate of 180,000 pounds and even that was low. Banksy's self portrait sold for 198,000 pounds which is some serious english cheddar, this however was quickly beat by a piece "Space girl and Bird" (Think Blur) that went for 288,000 pounds to an anonymous US bidder. recycled cellphone

pavxxphone.jpg

Researchers at the University of Warwick's Warwick Manufacturing Group, in conjunction with PVAXX Research & Development Ltd, have created a way to recycle discarded mobile telephones - bury them and watch them transform into the flower of your choice.

Mobile telephones are one of the most quickly discarded items of consumer electronics. Rapid changes in technology and taste means customers constantly upgrade their phones leaving behind more and more discarded phones.

A special formulation of PVAXX Research and Development Ltd's biodegradable polymer range was developed in conjunction with materials researchers at Warwick, that produces a high quality finish but which also biodegrades easily in compost.

Secondly the engineers at the University of Warwick have created a small transparent window in the case or cover in which they can embed a seed. The seed is visible to the environmentally aware mobile phone user but will not germinate until the phone cover or case is recycled. The researchers have drawn on the specialised seed expertise of researchers in the University of Warwick's horticultural research arm - Warwick HRI - to identify which types of seeds would perform best in this situation. For the first prototype telephones they have used dwarf sunflower seeds.

For more information about PAVXX check out Warwick University

reason not to go out and eat on mondays

buffet.jpg

From Smart Money.com, a article on 10 Things a restuarant wont tell you. and our favorite one is "Never go out to eat on a Monday."

If you think that Monday, when restaurants tend not to be crowded, is a great time to eat out, think again. "You're being served all of the weekend's leftovers," says Francis, coauthor of "How to Burn Down the House." Kitchens prepare food on a first-in, first-out basis, meaning whatever is oldest gets served first. It's a way to ensure that everything on the menu is as fresh as possible.

The system works great most days, but it can run into a little glitch over the weekend. Distributors typically take Sunday off and make their last deliveries Saturday morning — which means that by Monday any food not used over the weekend is at least three to four days old. And it will be served before the same ingredients arriving in Monday's delivery.

What to do if you wish to dine out on a Monday? Ignore your instincts and go to a place that's perpetually crowded. "If you are open 24/7 and busy all the time," says New York-based chef Lucia Calvete, "all your ingredients are fresh all the time."

An ancient theatre filters out low-frequency background noise. The ancient Greek theatre of the Asklepieion of Epidaurus, built mostly during the 4th century B.C. and now a World Heritage Site, is renowned for its extraordinary acoustics. Researchers have figured out that the arrangement of the stepped rows of seats are perfectly shaped to act as an acoustic filter, suppressing low-frequency background noise while passing on the high frequencies of performers' voices.

"This is a story of how the impossible became possible. How, for centuries, scientists were absolutely sure that solids (as well as decorative patterns like tiling and quilts) could only have certain symmetries - such as square, hexagonal and triangular - and that most symmetries, including five-fold symmetry in the plane and icosahedral symmetry in three dimensions (the symmetry of a soccer ball), were strictly forbidden. Then, about twenty years ago, a new kind of pattern, known as a "quasicrystal," was envisaged that shatters the symmetry restrictions and allows for an infinite number of new patterns and structures that had never been seen before, suggesting a whole new class of materials...."

Opening at Lazirides in London on the Nightmare on Elm Street famed Friday the 13th is 'Outcasts', a solo exhibition by Mark Jenkins. Here is a snippet of the press release
Washington DC-based installation artist Mark Jenkins has over the past four years
experimented with clear packing tape (sellotape) to create cast-based sculpture
that he installs in cities as a form of non-permission based street art, a sort of “off-
wall” graffiti. The works’ humour and surreal nature has helped generate huge
interest amongst the public and re-engaged them with their built environment.
Jenkins is now bringing his art to the UK, and for his first solo show at the
Lazarides gallery he will present an assemblage of sculptures and documentary
street installation photographs.

*Plus, if you are in Manhattan on April 10th, a full-sized replica subway car will be painted from 10am to 1pm at the NW corner of Houston St. and Lafayette St.

If you can not tell that is Kevin Smith, side by side with Mr. Danger himself, diehardy Bruce Willis in Live free or die hard. You need your own opinion on this one, not to spoil all the action but, watching John McCain ( I finally get the joke, McBain, McCain ) jump off a jet fighter wing over the BQE, is a bit much.( I think that was the BQE)

New Book by Faile

To accompany their exhibition 'From Brooklyn With Love' at Lazirides this past month, Brooklyn Art Collective Faile created a slick book in an edition of 1000. I am digging the black on black cover with their crest.

There are 1000 copies in the edition, 500 are being sold by FAILE and the other 500 by Lazirides.

kate and pete sing along

Its not Thursday, but kate is in the news with Petie.

Kate, scantily dressed in a see-through nightie and a pair of knickers, is swinging back and forth on a hammock during the private performance.

The couple is thought to be at Kate’s Cotswolds home, The Sun reports.

Kate kicks her legs in the air while swinging and sings along with Pete… but the romantic moment turns a bit sour when Kate blasts: “Don’t la la me.”

She then proceeds to call the song “crap”…

That’s precisely when Pete stops the recording.

videogame for nyc

The latest version of the popular, murder-your-way-to-victory video game "Grand Theft Auto" unleashes its violence in a city with an uncanny resemblance to New York — and city officials are upset.

"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers," said Jason Post, a spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In previous versions of the game, players killed both police officers and prostitutes, and sold pornography to children.

Trailers of the latest game, released Thurday on the Internet, show the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and Coney Island's Cyclone, while a voice is heard saying: "Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different." Hmmmm can't wait to play, I wonder if I can drive around Williamsburg and run over the hipster's is "gap" williamsburg jeans.

way to break up with your girlfriend or get divorced

kitcar.jpg

So you want to end that relationship, or get a divorced or better yet pick up chicks, here's the perfect opportunity. KITT, the flame-throwing, river-jumping, talking muscle car from the American '80s TV show "Knight Rider" starring David Hasselhoff, is up for sale.

Restored to its debut-season glory, the modified black 1982 Pontiac Trans Am is offered at $149,995 (€112,221) at a California auto dealership. Johnny "Vette" Verhoek of Kassabian Motors has had the car, officially called Knight Industries Two Thousand, on display for about a month.

It is one of four documented "camera cars" used for close-up shots and scenes where Hasselhoff, who played Michael Knight in the series, was behind the wheel.

Although it cannot achieve the 300 mph (483 kph) speeds that KITT reached, soar 50 feet (15 meters) in the air or throw smoke bombs, key features of the star car are intact. Perhaps most important, the red scanner light on the nose glows and makes a humming noise.

Most of the buttons in the cockpit do not do anything, Verhoek said. Nor can the car talk or drive itself. Via The International Herald Tribune
To buy Kitt check out Kassabian Motors.
