p_frost.jpg

Phil Frost makes paintings and sculptures that usually are a result of collaging and layering of images, along with the formation of hand-made, often symmetrical black and white patterns. These patterns, which are created with painstaking detail and using correction fluid as a medium, offer an appearance that oscillates between modernist designs and primitivism, abstraction and representation.

Frost's intensive approach toward every object he works on, whether it is the surface of a white canvas or a found object in the streets of New York, invariably result in a dense layering of forms and tightly knitted designs that conform richly complex compositions that engage and change before the eyes of the viewer. Frost's patterns often appear as arcane codes and a language of its own, composed of symbols such as letters, hearts, dots and mask-like forms.

In 2005 Frost's work was shown along side that of Picasso, Dali, Magritte and Warhol in a New York show tracing the History of the written word in works of art during the last century.

Available now are three prints (16"x20") in an edition of 100 each for $375. Get them here

showdown.jpg

"In a new initiative to generate more exposure for the artists in Your Gallery and Stuart, and to spotlight their work to as wide an audience as possible, we have created SHOWDOWN." -Saatchi Gallery

SHOWDOWN is for all registered Your Gallery and Stuart artists to enter their works for visitors to score. The winner of the final head-to-head vote will receive £1000 and the runner up will receive £750. The winning work will go on display at the new Saatchi gallery.

Any visitor to the site can rate and vote for artworks in SHOWDOWN.

All visitors are free to vote on all artworks, scoring them from one to ten (one being the lowest score and ten the highest).

Although visitors can vote for as many artworks that have been entered as they like, to prevent multiple voting by one person for one work, only one vote per individual artwork will be accepted from each visitor.

The artworks are displayed randomly and constantly rotate. Each time an artwork is rated by clicking on a star to register a vote a new random artwork is displayed. To see more images please click on the ‘Click here to see more images’ displayed on the SHOWDOWN homepage.

bomb it

tag.jpg

Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this friday, Bomb-it is a graffiti documentary for the 21st century. An art movement that spans the globe, graffiti is getting it's cred once again. I particularly enjoy this quote from Pablo Picasso,
"Graffiti belongs to everyone and no one. On a section of a condemned wall, I put up a graffito... a bank director stopped the construction work, had my carving cut out as a fresco and inlayed it in the wall of his apartment."
Sounds like Banksy to me

Banksy Banksy Banksy

blurbanksy.jpeg

Banksy's self portrait went to auction today and we predicted that it would trump its estimate of 30 to 40 thousand pounds. Well it did. We gave a high estimate of 180,000 pounds and even that was low. Banksy's self portrait sold for 198,000 pounds which is some serious english cheddar, this however was quickly beat by a piece "Space girl and Bird" (Think Blur) that went for 288,000 pounds to an anonymous US bidder. recycled cellphone

pavxxphone.jpg

Researchers at the University of Warwick's Warwick Manufacturing Group, in conjunction with PVAXX Research & Development Ltd, have created a way to recycle discarded mobile telephones - bury them and watch them transform into the flower of your choice.

Mobile telephones are one of the most quickly discarded items of consumer electronics. Rapid changes in technology and taste means customers constantly upgrade their phones leaving behind more and more discarded phones.

A special formulation of PVAXX Research and Development Ltd's biodegradable polymer range was developed in conjunction with materials researchers at Warwick, that produces a high quality finish but which also biodegrades easily in compost.

Secondly the engineers at the University of Warwick have created a small transparent window in the case or cover in which they can embed a seed. The seed is visible to the environmentally aware mobile phone user but will not germinate until the phone cover or case is recycled. The researchers have drawn on the specialised seed expertise of researchers in the University of Warwick's horticultural research arm - Warwick HRI - to identify which types of seeds would perform best in this situation. For the first prototype telephones they have used dwarf sunflower seeds.

Documentary about a reclusive artist...

Scott Walker is often referred to as the most reclusive (living) man in rock music, and has inspired the likes of Radiohead, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Johnny Marr, Jarvis Cocker, Neil Hannon, Brett Anderson and countless others. A new film brings many of these musicians (and Mr. Walker himself) together for a 95 minute peek into his life and recording processes.

Scott Walker 30th Century Man makes it's North American debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on May 2, 3 and 5th. Tickets to the screenings can be ordered here.
