puzzle, are the stripes smarter than you?

wspuzzle.jpg

The White Stripes are smarter than you? Only the smart ones shall pass. Its been reported, "are the stripes trying to weed out their intelligent fans from their vacuous ones, or are they just trying to create buzz for their new album Icky Thump (due out in June of this year)? " Either way, I guess its better than a coke commercial....oh wait they did that too.

disney.jpg

Like the Vatican in Rome, Disney World (aka the official name, Reedy Creek Improvement District), is basically a sovereign state. The 300 acres of land Walt purchased is detached from the rest of Florida. Disney World is exempt from State inspections and Democratic process, power remains in the hands of the board, and Disney allies.

french advertisement for lubrication

kyad.jpg

You might appreciate the subtlety of this ad, done by a Brazilian ad agency, for a lubricating gel (K-Y equivalent) targeting the French market. They were trying to come up with an ad that is not offensive or tasteless. The picture looks completely innocent until you notice the details... Apparently, it has created quite a buzz in Europe.

blog about shopping in NYC

racked.jpg

Curbed's has launched a brand new blog. Racked, the newest member of the Curbed family. It's a blog about shopping, neighborhood stores and the retail scene of New York City. Like all Curbed sites, Racked comes at its world from the street up, covering everything from the newest Nolita boutiques to gas station gift shops in Queens. Current obsessions include Diane Von Furtstenberg's forthcoming Meatpacking shrine, an alarming situation at Trader Joe's.

Racked is edited by Leslie Price, who comes to us by way of Time Out NY, where her beat was restaurants and bars as well as new shops, spas, and trends.

meat eater

fatpig.jpg

Now that you ran out and bought your skinny "williamsburg" jeans, from the Gap, head over to Fetta Sau ("Fat Pig" in German) part all-American barbecue pit, part beer and bourbon bar. Venture down the narrow, picnic table-lined patio into this converted mechanic's garage—across the street from owner Joe Carroll's other masterwork, Spuyten Duyvil—and you're instantly struck by two things: an entire wall of cartoonish yet edifying sketches of butcher cuts, and the satisfying smell of smoked meat.

Fette Sau, 354 Metropolitan Ave (between Havemeyer and N. 4th), Williamsburg, Brooklyn, 718-963-3404

to move out of williamsburg

skinnyjeans.jpg

The writing is on the wall, if you never had a reason before to move from Williamsburg (besides the trustafarian's) see teatsucker, you do now! Via free williamsburg(ironic dont you think) ,The gap has changed the name of their skinny jean cut as "hipster", to the "williamsburg". Apparently, in the world of fashion Williamsburg now officially means "annoyingly trendy," "androgynously thin," and/or "should never, ever be worn by adult males who aren't Lou Reed." Look for the Webster's inclusion next year.

Art seeing this weekend

devorah_sperber.jpg

The works of Devorah Sperber, recreates the classics at the Brooklyn Museum,"The eye of the artist"(through May 6).

"After The Mona Lisa" 4 is a life-sized rendering of da Vinci's Mona Lisa (measuring 41"h x 31"w including the frame). It is constructed from 875 spools of thread so the image resolution is very low. Yet when seen through a viewing sphere, the thread spools condense into a recognizable image, conveying how little information the brain needs to make sense of visual imagery it has already been exposed to.

At first glance, the thread spool installation appears to be a random arrangement of spools of thread. A clear acrylic sphere placed in front of the work, shrinks and condenses the thread spool "pixels" into a recognizable image while also rotating the imagery 180 degrees like the human eye. This shift in perception functions as a dramatic mechanism to present the idea that there is no one truth or reality, emphasizing subjective reality vs. an absolute truth. For more information on Devorah check out the site, devorahsperber.com

Gun Operated Alarm Clock

gun.jpg

The alarm clock has seen a resurgence of innovation in recent years. Unfortunately, most of these new designs focus heavily on waking someone up with an extremely loud noise or what can only be described as “alternative methods.”

Roger Ibars, the designer of the Gun Operated Alarm Clock, realizes that people hate their alarm clocks and believe that they should be severely punished for their treachery. There is a lot of satisfaction to be had by throwing your alarm clock against the wall or, in this case, shooting it until it turns off. Read more at nerd approved

bagels and buds

bagelbuds.jpg

Buffalo News reports a Hamilton, Ont., man faces federal drug charges after he allegedly tried to smuggle about 250 pounds of hydroponic marijuana into the United States on Tuesday with his regular commercial shipment of frozen bagels, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced.

Stipan Krak, 49, was bound for New Jersey with the bagel shipment when he tried to enter the U.S. at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.

Officers found six duffel bags that contained more than 250 vacuumsealed bags of marijuana.

“The marijuana has an estimated street value of over $750,000,” said Kevin Corsaro, public affairs officer for the agency.

Krak was charged with importation and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance.

sidekick on a razr

sidekick.jpg

hiptop3.com reports ..."We got the image above from someone who probably wants to remain anonymous. We’re told it’s a slide from a PowerPoint presentation given at the T-Mobile National Marketing Meeting last week in Twenty Nine Palms, CA. While it’s not as exciting as pictures of an actual device, it tells us a few things. The “Sidekick X RAZR Multimedia device” basically says it’s going to be made by Motorola, it’ll at least play music (possibly even video since they mention “multimedia” instead of “MP3″), and it will be a smaller form factor as is typical of the RAZR phones. Speculation past that at this point is probably just speculation. Whether or not this “Sidekick X RAZR” name will stick is yet to be seen as well, but chances are the “Sidekick” name is still going to be used since it mentions their “intentions with the Sidekick line”. What’s with the “4:49″ in the middle? We’re assuming this was put up on a projector at the conference with a countdown timer to when the session was due to start, a common sight for anyone attending conferences. What’s with the blur? Out of courtesy, we covered up someone’s full name so they don’t catch any heat. Unfortunately no time line or expected drop date, so we expect it’s far in the future. As always, we’ll keep you updated on what we hear."

An interactive mirror allows shoppers to receive instant feedback on outfits from friends in other locations. visual culture book

hidden_track.jpg

A great, smooth browsing book that complements the age of now.

"Hidden Track shows how contemporary visual culture is breaking out of the second dimension and printed form and entering into three-dimensional space, where it can be experienced. The book demonstrates how rooms are being occupied creatively and how items are being transformed. It presents the diverse exhibition possibilities that currently exist – a spectrum ranging from live painting to installations and 3D objects.

At the same time the book illustrates how urban and street art have recently moved even further out of the subculture and are now being featured more often in galleries and museums worldwide. It analyses how these public art forms are being perceived in an international art context and investigates the fundamentally different forms of presentation that this new context demands.

Through abundant images and incisive text Hidden Track also introduces the artists and exhibition spaces that are taking current visual culture out of the underground to the level of high culture."

PROCTOR & GAMBLE are Not SATANIST

pg.jpg

Proctor & Gamble have been cleared of being Satanist. The story: Sometime in the 1960s, when many people were announcing that the Age of Aquarius was dawning and New Age beliefs were beginning to receive wide circulation, the rumor started that the logo Proctor & Gamble had applied to their products for generations was a satanic symbol. The logo pictures the moon with a smiling face and 13 stars, representing, according to the urban belief, the number of satanists in a coven, the negativity of the number 13, and the devilish activities that evildoers commit in the moonlight.

Representatives of Proctor & Gamble had issued disclaimer after disclaimer, assuring the public that none of its executives or employees were satanists, but in 1994, a call to action was issued by alleged Christian fundamentalists demanding that all good Christians boycott all P&G products. According to the manifesto that was widely circulated, the president of P&G had appeared on the Phil Donohue television program on March 15, 1994, and announced without hesitation that he was a satanist.

Teat sucker

gawker.jpg

From Gawker...."25-year-old Natasha Agrawal has a problem. Her parents have just helped her buy a $900,000 two-bedroom penthouse in Williamsburg, and now they are being such jerks—they don't want her to move her "thrift-store" couches in there, even though they blend with the "deep greens, yellows and oranges that she plans as the color themes for the new apartment." Sadly, Natasha likely isn't the only Williamsburger who having to deal with with this kind of misfortune. According to the broker who sold her parents the apartment, "parents or children with trust funds are buying about 25 percent of the inventory in Williamsburg. In Ms. Agrawal's new building, parents bought about 10 percent of the 36 units." We only hope that these parents are less fascistic when it comes to decor, for the sake of the children!"
This is why I love and hate Williamsburg, I love what it has to offer, I hate who lives there.

sony phone W660

sony.jpg

Engadgets has posted Sony's new walkman phone. Its sporty orange trim gets switched out for a classy attempt in gold on Sony Ericsson's newest rendition, the W660. At a svelte 0.57-inches, the UMTS 2100 and GPRS 900/1800/1900 phone really packs in the goods with Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, FM radio support, a 2 megapixel camera, web browsing, RSS feeds, and a 512 MB Memory Stick Micro (upgradeable) that holds up to 470 of songs. It has a 2-inch color TFT display and totes random extras like TrackID, a music identification service, and a Picture Blogging function that allows you to send snapshots directly to your personal blog. To top off the lifestyle angle on this phone, Sony Ericsson has embellished the pants offa this one, with the aforementioned gold trim on both glossy color options, Record Black and Rose Red. The Rose Red (geez, what's up with the cranberry hype?) model jazzes it up a bit more with its floral-themed relief pattern on the backside. For those of you who are more concerned with performance, you'll get up to 6 hours of talk time on GSM, up to 2.5 hours with 3G, or a max of 25 hours of music listening.

version of rollingstone

rollingstone.jpg

New launch this week with the appearance of a Japanese edition of ROLLING STONE. Inside, you get a layout that is very reminiscent of the original magazine — and all the main articles (except for a piece on YMO/Sketch Show’s Yukihiro Takahashi) are just translated pieces from the US edition, even the album reviews — with a few “Japanese” add-ons, like fashion spreads (very catalogue-like, as seen in pretty much every Japanese men’s magazine) and things like a guide to Tokyo rock bars.

Instead of previewing the A-trak print that will drop soon, we bring to light an HPM (Hand Printed Multiple) that will be available at the East/West Propaganda Project Obey Giant vs. WK Interact. Presented by Agnes B. and taking place in three locations Paris, Tokyo, and Aoyama the show further complements what we have known all along, Street Art is here to stay and that it is a movement that will go down in history. The collaborative effort HPM by Shepard and WK looks incredible and whomever gets them will be lucky.

police story

police2.jpg

This book, somewhere between photojournalism and an illustrated diary, follows The Police around the globe between 1980 and 1983. From the American West to Australia to Japan, Summers recorded not only the band members rehearsing and partying—the proverbial sex, drugs, and rock and roll—he also photographed fans, landscapes, still lifes, and passersby in a reportage style reminiscent of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank. Containing over 600 photos and filled with diary-style entries, I’ll Be Watching You is a sumptuous volume beating with musical energy, nostalgia, and atmospheric beauty. A must for photo buffs and Police fans alike.

spray paint tips: a primer

ny_thin_caps.jpg

Whether you are painting a wall, train, truck, or home furnishing the quality of the paint flow from a can of spray paint is very important. Stock caps—which come factory made—really do not cut it as the flow and application of paint is pretty generic. Enter the world of a graffiti writer, where a multitude of caps exist. We focus on three.
NY thin caps or "soft caps" are the most favorable and commonly used, creating a consistent spray (medium sized line) from various distances and not wasting paint. You used to be able to find these on cans of Krylon crystal clear, but now the easiest way is to order online.
Fat caps are great for fill-ins or huge tags as the diameter of the spray can run up to 8 inches. these caps cover ground well and quickly.
German thins are great for detail, producing down to half inch lines. Maybe you want to add zebra stripes to your bathroom wall.

All of these caps can be purchased at graff supply, or where the above image was taken from Four The Hard Way

FROM BROOKLYN WITH LOVE

ItHappensEveryDay.jpg

Opening tommorow night (March 9th) at London's newly prestigious Lazarides Gallery is From Brooklyn With Love, Faile's first solo exhibit in the United Kingdom. The guys have been busy, coming off the Burning House show in Los Angeles. This exhibit will help catapult both the collective and their prices into orbit. Here is a brief snippet from the press release...
"From Brooklyn With Love presents a group of 45 painted wooden sculptures, and
new large-scale paintings including ‘It Happens Everyday’, 2006, where a glamorous woman is about to be swallowed by a huge monster, illustrated at the top of this release. The works in the exhibition present a series of classic FAILE images such
as the ‘Bunny Boy’ and ‘Bunny Girl’ two figures both cuddling a bunny up to their
face, ‘Forbidden Love’ an image of a wolf-man juxtaposed with two glamour girls,
and ‘Sinful Pleasures’ – an image of Ganesha and a curled snake. These images
are all built up from fragments from disparate sources such as comics, books,
signage and magazines."
The exhibit runs through April 7th

iConcertCal is a free iTunes plug-in that monitors your music library and generates a personalized calendar of upcoming concerts in your city. It is available for both Windows and Mac OS X and supports worldwide searches.

In addition to updating weekly, iCC provides links for venues/tickets.

record release

nin2.jpg

Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero campaign has been distributing tracks from the upcoming album on USB flash drives at concerts. The first two were found in bathroom stalls and then another taped to the barricade at a show.

They've all been 320 kbps MP3, DRM-free and widely distributed. Of course, the RIAA had a conniption, even though it's an official NIN viral promotion.

The new song,"In This Twilight", is accompanied by an apocalyptic website that imagines last night's a future Oscar ceremony as a scene of utter chaos and misery.

Excerpt, from the site..."Tabitha was born with seven fingers on each hand. Her father couldn’t take it. He joined the army instead so he could go to Iran and kill the people who did this to her. He says he’s not coming home until he’s got one for every finger. She just wants to see her dad."

Sell Out(Courtney that is)

kurt.jpg

Last year, when Courtney Love sold a 25% share of her stake in the Nirvana publishing catalog(probably to score some drugs) to music publisher Larry Mestel, a guy who would help her with licensing matters, she told Rolling Stone, "We're going to remain very tasteful, and we're going to [retain] the spirit of Nirvana and take Nirvana places it's never been before."

Well, we sure hope Kurt Cobain was a baseball fan, because Nirvana's "Breed" has turned up on the soundtrack to 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K7 video game, due out February 27.
