post-it wall

postiwall1.jpg

postwall2.jpg

Duncan Wilson created wallpaper consisting of four layers of varying grey tones on a bright primary backing. Each layer is perforated in a grid format and backed with a tacky adhesive similar to ‘post-it’ notes. Pixelnotes is inspired by the way we work within a space. The walls become functional, an integrated noticeboard that documents our activity within the room. Pixelated formations and shapes develop according to our patterns of use.

push for the future

HVR2.jpg

2015, the year Marty McFly visited the Hilldale of the future and rode around briefly on a hoverboard. Future Horizons inc. is trying to bring 2015 to 2007 with their own hoverboard (pictured above). Measuring 5 ft long and 2 ft wide it can lift a 200+ lb rider a whole inch above the ground. While they do not actually offer the hoverboard for sale, they do offer the plans for it for $40 meaning that you can do some design tweaks and possibly craft something better. Future Horizons inc. also offers plans for jet packs, laser pistols, and a whole lot more.

RETARDED IDEA

7WONDERS.jpg

Late breaking news, lets vote for the seven wonders of the world. Why not eight, nine, or ten wonders? Well someone decided that we need to vote on new ones. All I can say this is the biggest wast of time in the world. And, to top it off, the pyramids feel they maybe left out, so they are withdrawing from the vote. Do we really need this? Will you sleep better at night knowing you helped define the new seven wonders of the world? I know I will, so vote now.

art theft

picaso1.jpg

The paintings, "Maya and the Doll" (above) and "Portrait of Jacqueline," disappeared overnight Monday to Tuesday from the chic 7th arrondissement, or district, a Paris police official said.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said they were worth nearly $66 million, and that there were signs of breaking and entering in the house.

Though police only mentioned the two paintings, the director of the Picasso Museum, Anne Baldassari, said several paintings and drawings were stolen from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasso. Read more about the theft at cnn.com

reason we like the mac

Today, Parallels taking their Windows Virtualization software for Intel Macs to the next level, with a final release of an update featuring Coherence Mode and Transporter, additional features that have been in beta for months.

Visually, Coherence is the more spectacular feature, as it allows users to run Windows and Linux applications inside the Mac OS X Finder -- not in a separate virtualization environment. It's as close to the dream of running any software on a single platform as I've ever seen. Check it out in the YouTube video above. Read more at wired.com

"Nowhere in advertising is the gap between natural beauty and manufactured perfection more apparent than on subway posters. As we wait for transportation, we are unwillingly assaulted by larger-than-life representations of supposedly beautiful salespeople. The large scale of these ads and their extremely close proximity to the viewer offer up more than perceived intimacy, however... they give us the chance to see the mechanical flaws designed to correct their physical flaws."

/deepest train station in the world

gottardstation.jpg

What is “Porta Alpina”?This is the brilliant idea to transform the rescue stop of the future “Gotthard Base Tunnel”, which is located at the middle of the tunnel and 800 meters under the mountain, into a real public train station connected to the surface with lifts which are currently used as an access for the workers!
The boring of the “Gotthard Base Tunnel” started in 1996 and is planned to be finished in 2011. It will be the longest tunnel in the world with a length of 57 kilometers!

The “Porta Alpina” future train station (550 m) will allow the passengers of the Zürich - Milano line to transfer to the Brig - Chur - St Moritz line (Glacier Express) simply by taking a lift to the Sedrun (1404 m) train station at the surface of the mountain!

money maker, IRS goes after eBay

irsLogo.jpg

This is an ongoing saga, but the Financial Times has a wrapup of the current situation. In short, the US government wants to treat eBay as a "broker" who would then be required to file notices with the government about how much money its traders have made. The US proposal calls for this reporting to take place only when people sell more than several thousand dollars worth of merchandise in a year. Read on at arstechnica .com

reason to move to france

france.jpg

Let it be said there is a reason to move to France. The Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation in Paris designed by Frank Gehry. This new center will be built on island located on the Siene outside Paris. It will be the centerpiece of the campaign to invigorate France's contemporary art scene. And if that is not enough, Culture minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres announced that the goverment has approved a new tax benefit to encourage young people to pursue careers in the arts and to entice foreign artist to settle in France. One benefit amounts to a 50 percent tax reduction for the first five years of an artist's working life. Also, the country has reinstated a policy whereby public buildings projects must use at least 1 percent of their budget to purchase or commission artworks. You can read more about this in February's ArtNews, and Dexigner.

THE RAPE OF THE SABINE WOMEN
THEY CALL IT LOVE, I CALL IT MADNESS

Creative Time Presents The U.S. Premiere and Exclusive NY Screening of EVE SUSSMAN AND THE RUFUS CORPORATION’S VIDEO MUSICAL THE RAPE OF THE SABINE WOMEN with an Original Score by Jonathan Bepler

"This visually stunning reinterpretation riffs on the Roman myth of abduction and intervention that resulted in Romulus’s founding of Rome. Inspired by Jacques-Louis David’s 1799 painting, this version is updated to the idealist 1960s, with Romans recast as G-men, the Sabines as butchers’ daughters, and the heyday of Rome allegorically implied in an affluent international-style summer house. While the myth traces the birth of a society, the film exposes the loneliness and desire that destroys the perfectly manicured utopia. “Clothes, dignity and inhibition are all shed in an epic battle that Sussman and choreographer Claudia De Serpa Soares sought to lace with the drama of ‘moving pictures’ ” - Nick Stillman, Art Review

1 WEEK ONLY: FEB 22 – FEB 27
Free daily screenings 2pm, 6pm, 9:45 pm

Sex Club

brothel.jpg

It's Valentines Day, so why not a post about sex clubs. Last Year, after a yearlong $253,000 to clean up of its frescoes and repairing the 2 story structure the doors are opened to the public. The Lupanare— its name, which derives itself from the Latin word "lupa," or "prostitute", was a brothel decorated with frescoes of erotic figures believed to be the most popular in the ancient Roman city. The prices were cheap, as low as the equivalent of two loaves of bread or a portion of wine. The frescoes, above each doorway, portrayed a variety of positions. It is unclear weather these were advertisements for the services or ancient Playboys used to stimulate the visitors. So on your next visit to Pompeii, sight seeing can be fun.

resort on Providenciales Turks and caicos

amanyara.jpg

Amanyara sits on the Northwest edge of the island of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos. Secluded from touristy Grace Bay, the resort boasts tourist-free waters and a blissful calm. The design of Amanyara is eastern influenced, with the buildings positioned to let the breeze flow through casually. There are no palm trees at Amanyara, instead the the owners Aman Resorts shipped in trees native to the Phillipines to grace the grounds. While relaxing one must have the Amanyara mojito, a rendition of the cuban classic only substituting the soda water for Veuve Cliquot. Rates start at $1350 a night and move upwards to $8600 during the period of January 3rd to May 31st. The Turks and Caicos is just a 3 hour flight from JFK.

propaganda DVD

russia.jpg

The four-DVD set 'Animated Soviet Propaganda' opens the vaults on decades of Cold War humor. These are no Disney-like fairy tales or Russian folk stories. Instead, these animated short films intended for the Soviet masses painted a sinister portrait of life in capitalist America.

"Black and White," produced in 1933, depicted a highway with an endless row of blacks lynched on telephone poles. "The Millionaire," made in 1963, told the story of a rich American woman who leaves $1 million to her pet bulldog, who becomes so wealthy and powerful that he eventually is elected to Congress. And in the 1979 animated short "Shooting Range," a jobless American youth finds work in a carnival shooting gallery only to discover the evil, greedy owner is now charging double — for people to use the youth as target practice.

These films, rarely seen in the West, are among several dozen included in a four-disc DVD anthology titled "Animated Soviet Propaganda" that is being distributed by Kino International and Films by Jove. The collection retails for $89. Read more about it in the LA Times.

scrapbook

bresson.jpg

Although Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) is widely considered one of the world's greatest photographers, much about his early work remains unknown. For this reason, Cartier-Bresson's personal scrapbook of his best work from his rich early period (1932-46) provides an extraordinary window onto his process and artistic development, documenting both his travels to Spain and Mexico and his encounters with Surrealism and modern art.

The exhibition is organized by Agnes Sire of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, where it first appeared; it will have its sole American venue at ICP. The publication that accompanies the exhibition reproduces all the images chosen by Cartier-Bresson, as well as his correspondence and historical documents.

REASON NOT TO WATCH THE SUPERBOWL

supperbowl.jpg

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NFL has nixed a church's plans to use a wall projector to show the Colts-Bears Super Bowl game, saying it would violate copyright laws.

NFL officials spotted a promotion of Fall Creek Baptist Church's "Super Bowl Bash" on the church Web site last week and overnighted a letter to the pastor demanding the party be canceled, the church said.

Initially, the league objected to the church's plan to charge a fee to attend and that the church used the license-protected words "Super Bowl" in its promotions.

We are not a religious bunch here at twbe but come on! Its a church. Maybe I should try and pick up a $5000.00 and up ticket to watch it in person.
